Men’s Golf Pennant Round 1 Results

The men’s pennant season kicked off on Sunday and Apollo Bay’s Division 2 side made the trip to Camperdown to take on Warrnambool.

Captain Guy Holman choose a relatively experienced team, with some new inductee’s.

Toby Cady made his first appearance for the Division 2 side as well as Bob Craig Returning due to good form.
In Ideal conditions the Bay won the toss (finally after years of Hilly never winning) and decided to lead.

Michael Dougan played number 7 and led the Bay’s attack, he never really got things going losing 5&4.

Bob Craig was the number 6, whilst he was down early in the game, he charged home late with a birdie on the last to win 1 up.

Toby Caddy played at number 5, whilst he was also down most of the day he clawed his match to get back to 1 hole down with a couple to play. He ultimately lost 3&2 after a solid performance.

Ian Woodfield took on one of Warrnambool’s longer hitters at number 4, experience over youth prevailed for Woody in the end winning 3&2.

The ever reliable Don Wagstaff was number 3, whilst also down during periods of his match, he got back level heading down the 18th, he managed a solid par on the last to his opponents bogey winning 1 up.

Guy Holman squandered several chances to close out his match early at number 2. Leading most of the day he let 3 putts take over and gave his opponent a sniff.
Guy eventually won on the 17th hole 2&1.

Victory was secured for the Bay, with 1 game still in progress.
Our number 1 Andrew Hill was in a tight battle at all square with 2 holes left.
He managed a good up and down on 17 to save par and head down the 18th still tied. He got up on the 18th with another solid par after his opponent found trouble off the tee.

A great start for Apollo Bay winning 5 & 2 sitting in second position.

Division 2 take on Camperdown next weekend at Mortlake, with Andrew Hill missing through Business (Dream-world, Movie-world & Sea-world) Holman will bring in the master blaster Alistair McKenzie to fill the void.

Division 4 still have a few more weeks before they kick off their campaign. Captain Lash Szulik is confident for a finals berth in his division, as they only have 3 matches with 1 being at home.

Men's Pennant Team - Round 1 at Camperdown V's Warrnambool

Team in order:

1# Andrew Hill:
The reigning treble club champion, not much left to prove in his own game, Hilly carries with him an impeccable pennant record losing only a handful of matches in over 10 seasons.
On several occasions going through the season undefeated!
Hilly's game is sound, generally down the middle, hits most greens and is a descent putter.
He is almost the perfect matchplay competitor.
We are counting on him to lead the team from the front.

2# Guy Holman (C):
His accomplishments on the golf course speak for themselves, pennant champion, club champion, district champion, Guy thrives in the heat of competition & pennant season is his favirote time of the year.
Guy carries with him an X Factor in his game, capable of going very low and scoring a blizzard of birdies, with impeccable ball striking.
His 2012 has started well & he carries good form into pennant, first year as pennant captain and is eager to put in a good showing.
 3# Don Wagstaff:
It's a term which is not thrown around lightly, but to say Don Wagstaff, is probably Apollo Bay's Greatest ever golfer would'nt be an understatement.
4 Time Club Champion, Pennant champion on several occasions, Don has the game & mental strength to grind his oppenents into the ground with supreme accurracy & low scoring.
His game is hard to match, due to being consistantly down the middle, a good short game to boot, he makes for one bloke you dont want to draw against.
Look for him to excel at Warnambool & Cobden where accuracy can be vital.
 4# Ian Woodfield:
This Guy's got game!
A previous scratch marker, Ian joined the club 17 years ago and has been at the forefront of golf in Apollo Bay since.
He is a past club champion, past pennant champion more than once & has led Apollo Bay as our number 1 player on several occasions.
Ian more than most understands the technical side of the game, the fundamentals of his swing are what brings out the best in him, "keep it simple".
With his supberb knowledge around the course, sound swing and deadly putter, we look to Ian to steady the ship in our middle ranks.
He will most likely play solid 5-6 handicappers with similar experience.

 5# Bob Craig:
With more golf under his belt than most, Bob is sure to make an impact on the pennant scene in 2012. Captained our reserves team in 2010 to championship glory with 1 player short, Bob has tasted success on more than 1 occasion.
He has a driving game most guy's dream about. If he gets the driver working he will be very hard to beat.
A regular podium sitter at most local tournaments, Bob is looking to get some early wins on the board for the team to reduce the pressure from A.Hill & G.Holman.
His 2012 has started tremendously & he is in superb form heading into pennant.

6# Toby Caddy: (No photo)
Promoted from Reserves Captain last year to make the top 7 golfers in Apollo Bay in 2012.
Toby Cady has got a serious distant game which is in turn helped by his desire to improve his all round game.
He continues to impress winning countless tournaments at home, Toby hits his irons like most guys hit thier drivers. He hits his drives as far as I take holidays.
If he gets the putter working on the quicker greens he will be a very handy number 6.
Could improve his position as the season progresses. He is our secret weapon.

7# Michael Dougan:
Most Guy's are'nt to familiar with the little Irishman from over the hills. Doog's is one of the nicest guy's you could meet & a great team man.
From Laver's Hill he makes visits to play in local tournaments as often as he can.
Michael is a single figure golfer with an exceptional game. If he could play more often he would be crazy good.
He has tasted success in winning the 2009 DIV 3 pennant flag with Apollo Bay.
Apollo Bay Open B Grade champion in 2010 and blew the course apart at Peterborough in 2007 with a -4 par (47 points).
Plays with the best Right to Left game Ive seen in our club, We look to Doog's to lead us off and try to secure an early win for the bay.

An unpresedented amount of winners of the monthly medal.

Some good signs have also been shown for the upcomming pennant season with good numbers comitted and some good form leading in.
Jim Black continues to impress with regular low scores, his recent scores of 66 & 73 gross may see him sneak his way into DIV 2.
Captain Guy Holman has also lead's the way with regular 71's & a 68 to boot.
Commitments by Andrew Hill & other notable low markers means we should have a succesful season.

Please remember, on Saturday 24th March at 5.00pm we will be having a chicken run, followed by a pennant dinner (fish & chips by Doni'O & games), I reccomend all pennant players attend, as teams will be selected on the night.
Get amoungst one another and lets try and make it all the way in 2012!

Friday Night Ambrose - FINAL

Well we have come to a close this season on the friday night ambrose.
This year we had a run-away winner, team Ernie Els (Jeremy Ellis, Karl Macsparron, Alistair McKenzie & James Crump). won by 7pts. Not only did they win the coverted golden trophy & a bagfull of prizes, they also won the final daily event, posting a even par 32 in horrible conditions.

Second place getters the John Dalys (Dennis Flakemore, Guy Permezel, Toby Caddy, Bruce Munro)faired reasonably well, considering all the negative articles posted in the local news the week prior.
They finished second overall 7 pts behind Team Ernie Els.
They also finished scond on the final day with a handy 1 over par 33.

Congratulations to all the winners during this tournament, it surely was an enjoyable event for all and we hope to continue with the format for years to come.
